I would like to register an NPO. What do I need to know? What do I need to do?

So, you’ve decided to start up an NPO. Congratulations! Your country needs you. Your NPO will contribute to uplifting your community and provide you personally with much fulfilment. You’ll need to comply with a few formalities first. Let’s start with registering the NPO.

What is the difference between a NGO and an NPO?

An NPO is a Non-Profit Organisation while an NGO is simply a widely-used term for a Non-Governmental Organisation that is not part of government or the corporate sector, and focusses on development or human rights issues.

Why do I need to register?

You don’t have to, but you really should. Registration improves the credibility of your organisation because you have to account to a public office. This in turn helps you get funding.

How long does the registration process take?

It should take no more than two months to process the entire registration.

How much does it cost?

It’s free! Yippee!

How do I register?

  • Register online at the NPO Directorate at the Department of Social Development
  • http://www.dsd.gov.za/npo
  •  Fill in the relevant information.
  •  Attach a copy of your organisation’s founding document, e.g. a signed constitution, deed of trust or memorandum of incorporation.
  • Attach the certificate of incorporation if a non-profit company and letters of authority if a trust.
  • The slower option is to send the completed application form by snail mail to the address on the form. In that case, enclose two signed copies of the founding document and, where applicable, certificate of incorporation or letters of authority.
  • Once the NPO Directorate receives your application, they will send you a letter acknowledging receipt.
  • After that you will receive a registration certificate if your application meets the requirements of the NPO Act.
  • They usually send your registration documents on to the provincial department of Social Development.
  •  After registration you will have to submit financial and narrative reports annually.
